Mayolo-Pic wins Pan Am road race
| Mar del Plata, Argentina (April 30, 2005)—Tina Mayolo-Pic (Dahlonega,
Ga.) gave the United States its third continental championship and 11th medal at the 2005 Pan American Championships with
a win in Saturday’s 84 kilometer women’s road race.
Mayolo-Pic took the sprint from a group of five riders
ahead of silver medalist Yeilien Fernandez (CUB) and bronze medalist Yumari Gonzalez (CUB). Mayolo-Pic’s teammate, Laura
Van Gilder (Pocono Pines, Pa.) was fifth.
Mayolo-Pic’s win on Saturday, along with Kristin Armstrong’s
(Boise, Idaho) victory in the individual time trial and Erin Mirabella’s (La Habra, Calif.) gold medal in the points
race, gives the United States three continental champions with one event remaining. Joe Papp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will contest
the men’s road race on Sunday.
Mayolo-Pic’s win also results in an automatic entry into the 2005 UCI World
Championships later this year in Madrid.
The United States is now tied with Cuba in the overall medal count with 11.
Host country Argentina and Colombia each have nine.

Laura Van Gilder & Tina Pic named to the Pan Am Championships
team
Colorado Springs, Colo. (April
12, 2005)—USA Cycling announced today the eleven-member team that will represent the United States at the Pan American
Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina April 25-May 1.
Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho), Kimberly Baldwin (Boulder,
Colo.), Erin Mirabella (La Habra, Calif.), Tina Mayolo-Pic (Dahlonega, Ga.), Christine Thorburn (Menlo Park,
Calif.) and Laura Van Gilder (Pocono Pines, Pa.) will team up for the women’s road
race while Armstrong and Thorburn will also contest the time trial.
On the track, Mirabella will ride the three women’s
endurance events – individual pursuit, points race, and scratch race. Armstrong will also ride the individual pursuit
and Van Gilder will compete in the points race and scratch race.
Stephen Alfred (Capitola, Calif.),
Kevin Belz (Irving, Texas), Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif.), Brad Huff (Fair Grove, Mo.), and Joe Papp (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
make up the men’s contingent.
The trio of Belz, Blatchford and Alfred will combine talents for the team sprint
while each of them will also ride the individual sprint. Alfred and Belz will also contest the keirin and Blatchford will
ride the kilometer time trail.
On the endurance side, Huff will ride the individual pursuit, points race and scratch
race and Papp will ride the men’s road race.
