Mayolo-Pic wins Pan Am road race

Mar del Plata, Argentina (April 30, 2005)—Tina Mayolo-Pic (Dahlonega, Ga.) gave the United States its third continental championship and 11th medal at the 2005 Pan American Championships with a win in Saturday’s 84 kilometer women’s road race.

Mayolo-Pic took the sprint from a group of five riders ahead of silver medalist Yeilien Fernandez (CUB) and bronze medalist Yumari Gonzalez (CUB). Mayolo-Pic’s teammate, Laura Van Gilder (Pocono Pines, Pa.) was fifth.

Mayolo-Pic’s win on Saturday, along with Kristin Armstrong’s (Boise, Idaho) victory in the individual time trial and Erin Mirabella’s (La Habra, Calif.) gold medal in the points race, gives the United States three continental champions with one event remaining. Joe Papp (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will contest the men’s road race on Sunday.

Mayolo-Pic’s win also results in an automatic entry into the 2005 UCI World Championships later this year in Madrid.

The United States is now tied with Cuba in the overall medal count with 11. Host country Argentina and Colombia each have nine.
