Joe Martin Stage 4 By Jim Williams
Quark's Lemieux Notches first NRC win.
May 15, 2005
Fayetteville, Ark. Audrey Lemieux of the Quark Cycling Team rode to her first NRC Victory today in the 4th stage
of the Joe Martin stage race. While called a crit, the course through downtown Fayetteville was more like a circuit
race, with a difficult uphill climb and twisty turns through the town center. Lemieux broke away from the main pack 20
minutes into the 60 minute race and was able to gain an advantage of 20 seconds. It was then that Lisa Vetterlein
of the Kenda Team bridged up and the two worked together to stay away. The two riders in front got some help from
race leader Lyne Gaggioli of Monex who was not concerned, as neither rider was a threat to her leader's jersey as well
as Lemieux's Quark teammates who moved to the front to block. The 20 second gap started to come down with 3 laps to
go but a huge effort by Vetterlein followed by one by Lemieux assured that the two would fight it out for the uphill sprint
win in front of the people of Fayetteville and the main field. On the last lap, as the riders approached the hill Vetterlein
lead with Lemieux tucked in behind. Waiting and showing poise and patience beyond her 20 years of age, Lemieux launched
her sprint with 150 meters to go and instantly created a gap that carried her to victory. The girls of Quark
raced to congratulate their young teammate in the process, Laura Van Gilder finished third just in front of Nicole Freeman
of Ford-Basis and Quark riders Grace Fleury and Annette Beutler. Lyne Gaggioli finished safely in the bunch and won
her forth consecutive Joe Martin Stage race trophy.

A long day in the saddle by Jim Williams
May

Fayetteville, Ark.
The second of two stages of the Joe Martin Stage race was run this morning with race
leader Lyne Gaggioli barely recovered from her solo ride yesterday evening that gave her the lead. Quark with six riders all
finishing in the main group yesterday had many weapons to use and use them they did. The Quark girls launched repeated attacks
and forced the lone Monex rider to defend on her own. Time and time again Gaggioli covered these attacks by Quark and when
Quark wasn't attacking, Colavita took up the aggression. It appeared that Gaggioli was more like the Iraqi resistance then
a bike rider but her efforts against overwhelming force eventually allowed Quark rider Candice Blickem to get away at the
25 mile mark. The only rider to give chase was Ford-Basis rider Kele Husler who stayed in no women's land, between Blickem
and the chasing group, where she would stay until absorbed at the end. Blickem built a lead of 4:00 minutes which made her
the leader on the road but, the Colavita and Victory Brewing teams having missed the break wanted to salvage their day and
went to the front to bring the gap down. After 49 miles in front and with just 1 mile to go in the race Blickem was spotted
by the peloton. Coming into the flat slightly down hill finish with the pack closing fast, it appeared that she just might
hang on but was passed by a few of the sprinters with 5 feet to go. When the dust of the exciting finish had settled, Ford-Basis
rider Nicole Freeman had nipped Quarks Laura Van Gilder at the line. Blickem held on for a top ten finish. Riders now have
a short rest before they are once again on their bikes for this evening's uphill time trail.

Gaggioli Rides to Victory
by Jim Williams
May
12, 2005
Fayetteville, Ark. The first stage of the Joe Martin stage race saw a super human
effort put in by Monex rider Lyne Gaggioli. Gaggioli broke away from the main
pack on Mount Gaylor
and quickly bridged up to Quark riders Laura Van Gilder and Grace Fleury who had been out in front in a break. Behind Gaggioli's
effort, Colavita riders Dotsie Cowden and Sue Plamer-Komar gave chase with Quarks Helen Kelly and Annette Beutler. As Gaggioli
caught the leading two, Grace Fleury attempted to stay with the continued pace set by the Monex rider but her efforts were
in vain. She eventually dropped back and joined chase group which was driven by 3 Quark riders and 2 Colavitas. Gaggioli continued
to gain time on the climb and both Helen Kelly and Grace Fleury of Quark slipped back to a larger chase group behind. The
three riders left continued to work in order to bring back Gaggioli but her gap continued to grow to 3:00 minutes. Being out
numbered Quarks Annette Beutler starting sitting on the 2 Colavita riders, and waited for her teammates behind to catch up
and help out. With 6 Quark riders and both Palmer-Komar and Cowden driving the
pace with 15 miles to go it would seem that the corporation behind would signal the end of Gaggioli escape. At the finish
line it was a lone rider coming across first as Gaggioli scored the win for Monex and was also able conserve 2:42 of her lead.
In the sprint for second Quarks Van Gilder took out the bunch gallop followed by her teammate Beutler.
